History of the Paul Bowers Scholarship

Each year, the Somers Lacrosse Association presents two scholarships dedicated to the memory of Paul Bowers, a young man who loved lacrosse and exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and participation. 

Paul played lacrosse before it was part of the Somers High School sports program. He played several years for the Somers Lacrosse Club while attending Somers High School. Paul was dedicated to the sport and often helped to coach younger boys who were just entering the program.

Although he played competitively and hard, Paul derived his pleasure from participation. He enjoyed the competition, the hard work, and the social aspects of the game. A team player on and off the field, Paul was liked and respected by his teammates, his classmates, and all who knew him. He died tragically in an automobile accident on March 5, 1985 at the age of 18.

Sportsmanship

Conduct becoming to one participating in a sport.  Sportsmanship refers to virtues such as fairness, self-control, courage, and persistenence and is associated with interpersonal concepts of treating others fairly, maintaining self-control in dealing with others, and respect for both authority and opponents.

Qualifications

Scholarships will be awarded based upon the following criteria:

• Must be a graduating senior from Somers High School
• Must have participated in at least one (1) year of lacrosse at the varsity, junior varsity or Somers lacrosse youth level
• Must be furthering their education at an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school
• Must have demonstrated good sportsmanship in athletics or in extra-curricular activities in school or in the community and  have maintained  a good academic standing
• Must have completed and submitted a scholarship application by the deadline
• Served volunteer time to support youth lacrosse and/or Somers Lacrosse Association activities (i.e. assistant coaching, helping at practices, working at the Paul Bowers tournament)

Selection Criteria

Recipients shall be selected by Paul Bowers Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Somers Lacrosse Association, based on evaluation and scoring of the completed application.

NOTE THAT APPLICANTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE PLAYED HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE!

DEADLINE is May 4, 2023

THE SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS THIS YEAR WILL BE

$3,500 EACH TO ONE HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR BOY AND GIRL
